Updates on home-server and things

Woot! I have updates for nobody to read, but I’ll enjoy thinking about what to write and exercising my arthritic fingers typing it.

Update 1:

I’m happy as Larry with a new PC what I built a couple of weeks ago. I’ve gone with Intel this time after 20+ years of only using AMD CPUs, then a week later came news about Intel CPU’s being flaky under certain conditions. Never mind though, my model isn’t among the chief culprits. Compared to the mini pc I had been using it is night and day. My GPU has a paltry 2GB of vram as I am not a gamer so have never felt the urge to spend £10000 on a graphics card. I am now running AI models locally on my super new PC (mostly via Ollama installed on WSL). Even with my massive CPU and enormous RAM they run a little slow, so I may invest in a new gigantic GPU at some point. I have my eye on an RTX 3060 with whopping 12GB vram, which ought to provide superiorsome performance.

Update 2:

I have been tinkering with my little Dell home lab/server. I have setup a Cloudflare tunnel for external access to several of my apps/services with very strict zero trust policies implemented. Currently running the following Docker containers, amongst others:

FreshRSS: My RSS feed aggregator (I check it daily)

JDownloader2: To download stuff sometimes

Nextcloud: I felt it beholden upon me to install Nextcloud as it’s the thing to do (It’s your personal Google cloud)

Filebrowser: For browsing files

Duplicati: Cos backing up is(n’t) hard to do

Portainer: For Docker management

Prometheus/Grafana: I have a server monitoring setup running  with pretty graphs to look at

SearXNG: My own localised and private search engine (now Google don’t need to know about my embarrassing searches)

That’s all, I can give my weary arthritic fingers a rest now.
